Virtual Try-On for Lingerie and Intimates Stores: What Works

Quick answer
Every try-on vendor wants to tell you the product works for everything. That is how you end up with a bra on a screen and a shopper wondering why they just gave a website their photo.
Does virtual try-on work for lingerie stores?
For bras, briefs and shapewear, we say no, and we are the people selling the tool. Corlen is built for clothing, and its generation rules keep results modest. We would not use it to render underwear on a person, and neither should you.
That is not a gap to apologize for. It is a boundary that protects your customers, and it keeps the feature from turning into the thing people screenshot for the wrong reasons.
Why is lingerie different from other clothing?
Three things set it apart, and none of them are about how a garment looks:
- Fit is a measurement problem: band size and cup volume decide whether a bra works, and sizing varies by brand and style. A picture of the bra on a body does not tell a shopper which band to order.
- Privacy matters more: shoppers are far less comfortable uploading a photo for underwear than for a jacket, and that discomfort costs you trust.
- Returns are limited by hygiene: many sellers treat worn or unsealed underwear as non-returnable, so a wrong size is often a loss. See how this plays out in swimwear, which has the same hygiene rules.
Bra fitting is serious enough that big retailers build dedicated tools for it. A 2022 Ypulse report described Victoria's Secret adding a bra-fitting feature to its app, built with the 3D scanning company NetVirta, to give shoppers a personalized size. The tool measures. It does not just show.

What actually helps lingerie shoppers choose a size?
Aim at the real problem. A few things do more for lingerie returns than any image:
- Publish band and cup measurements, with plain instructions for measuring at home.
- Add a short fit quiz or size finder that recommends a size from those measurements.
- Write brand-specific notes: runs small in the band, cups are shallow, wire sits high.
- Surface reviews that mention fit, and let shoppers filter by them.
- Keep exchange rules easy to find, even if refunds are limited.
Our guide to reducing size returns on a Shopify clothing store covers the audit side of this. It applies to intimates as much as to jeans, with the difference that your size chart carries more of the load.
Where can an intimates store use try-on?
Most intimates stores sell more than underwear. If you stock robes, pajama sets, loungewear, hoodies or cover-ups, those are ordinary garments with ordinary questions: does this robe hit at the knee, does this set look relaxed or sloppy, is the hoodie as oversized as the product photo suggests.
For those, a photo try-on is a perfectly good answer, and the shopper never has to upload anything sensitive. Picture a customer choosing a gift robe for a sister, wanting to see the length on a real body before buying. That is the job. On a Shopify store, keep the try-on block off your lingerie product pages and use it on the robes and loungewear.
How should you split the catalog?
Think of it as two shelves. Underwear goes on the measurement shelf: size guides, quizzes, reviews. Everything shoppers wear in front of other people goes on the try-on shelf. If a product sits on the line, leave the button off. Nobody has ever returned a product because the try-on button was missing.
Not sure where a product falls? Run a few of your robes and loungewear sets through the live demo and judge the results yourself. If you want to see how stores size up the results afterward, read how to measure virtual try-on results.
Frequently asked questions
Does Corlen work for lingerie?
We do not recommend it. Corlen is built for clothing, and its generation rules keep results modest, so it is not the tool for rendering bras or briefs on a shopper's body. Test your own products in the live demo before deciding anything.
What can an intimates store use virtual try-on for?
Anything a shopper wears in public or around the house: robes, sleepwear sets, loungewear, hoodies and cover-ups. These are ordinary garments where a quick look at how the cut sits is useful and nothing sensitive is shown.
What helps lingerie shoppers pick a size online?
A size guide built on band and cup measurements, a short fit quiz, clear brand-specific notes and honest reviews that mention fit. These address the real problem, which is measurement, not appearance.
Is it safe to ask shoppers for photos for intimate products?
Do not ask for them. Requesting body photos for underwear creates privacy risk and trust problems you do not need. Keep photo upload to the garments where it makes sense.
